Jesus is God

My house is quiet this Christmas morning. No one is stirring — not even a mouse (because I’m pretty sure the farm cats took care of that). It’s given me a moment to reflect on the Mass readings, and they are unequivocal:

Jesus is God.

Islam calls Him a “great prophet”; the Jews consider Him a mere historical figure; Jehovah’s Witnesses claim He’s an angel. But the Word of God is clear:

Jesus is God.

In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God. (John 1:1)

How beautiful upon the mountains
are the feet of him who brings glad tidings,
announcing peace, bearing good news,
announcing salvation, and saying to Zion,
“Your God is King!” (Isaiah 52:7)

For to which of the angels did God ever say:
You are my son; this day I have begotten you?
Or again:
I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me?
And again, when he leads the firstborn into the world, he says:
Let all the angels of God worship him. (Heb 1:5-6)

“I do believe, Lord,” and he worshiped Him. (John 9:38)

When they saw Him, they worshiped (Matt 28:17)

Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28)

Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you,
before Abraham came to be, I AM.” (John 8:58)

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God,
“the one who is and who was and who is to come, the almighty.” (Rev 1:8)

Jesus is God — and that changes everything. He is no longer a mere prophet, but the Source of all prophecy. He is no longer a historical figure, but the Author of all history. He is no longer angelic but the Lord of all angels.

But then who is He to me?

She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because He will save his people from their sins…
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name Him Emmanuel,

which means “God is with us.” (Matt 1:21, 23)

Jesus is God — and God has come to save me from my sin.. sin that robs me of true peace, joy, equilibrium, happy relationships, and most notably, eternal life. If this is who Jesus is and His purpose, how can I remain ambivalent about my life: my words, actions, and even thoughts?

Jesus is God… and He is with us — with me. And that should change everything…

I want to thank all of you, my dear readers, who have prayed for this ministry, who have supported it financially, who have sent words of encouragement and reflection. I have tried to respond to all your emails — and if I didn’t, please forgive me. Also, to those who wrote me physical letters… my plan in November was to sit down and write you. But then Canada Post went on strike! So, I’m sorry that I could not send you a thank you card. But I pray for all of you each day.

I pray that you may experience the reality of Emmanuel and know that, even if you are alone today, Jesus is with you. He will never leave you. Speak to Him… thank Him… love Him… He is there with you now!

Merry and blessed Christmas! You are loved!
